Description
The studyof Chemistryoffers studentsopportunities to consider theuse that humanbeings
makeof theplanet’s resources and the impact of humanactivitieson theenvironment. An
understandingof chemistry, and theapplicationof thisunderstanding, helps students to
appreciate the factors that influence thepursuit of scienceand tomake informeddecisions
aboutmodifyingand interactingwithnature.
Scientific inquiry commonly involves teamsof peoplewithdiverse skills andknowledge.
Chemists can contribute to such teams through their studyof theproperties, uses, means
of production, and reactionsof natural andprocessedmaterials. Chemists alsomakea
critical studyof the social andenvironmental impact ofmaterials and chemical processes.
Their skills inobservation, and indesigningandperformingexperiments,makean
important contribution toadvances in scientific theories.
Through the studyof chemistry, studentsdevelopanunderstandingof thephysicalworld
that enables them tobequestioning, reflective, and critical thinkers. As awayof knowing,
students canuse chemistry toexploreandexplain their experiencesof phenomenaaround
them.
Semester 2 topic can include:
Acids and theEnvironment
ReactingQuantities/Stoichiometry
Redox/Electrochemistry
Assessment
The followingassessmentwill beundertaken inStage1Chemistry:
Assessment Type1: Investigations Folio
Studentsundertakeat least onepractical investigationandat least one issues investigation
to include in the folio.
Students inquire intoaspectsof chemistry throughpractical discoveryanddataanalysis, or
by selecting, analysing, and interpreting information.
